hi

i am thinking of getting a Tropical fish tank set up

I have skimmed through the stickie posts, but i have a few questions

How much am i looking at for a 80-90 litre tank? I can't find any prices anywhere? would 2nd hand tanks be a good idea?

have a read of the link in my sig 'step by step guide to setting up an aquarium'

it covers most of the basics, what equipment you need, new tanks vs second hand, what size tank is good to start with etc.

it doesn't have prioces though as this is an international forum and they can vary massively from country to country.

generally most people are either working to an idea of what they want as the finished result or are working to a budget, if you can give us an idea of what you want we can try to put some prices to it or if you have a budget then let us know and we can give an idea of what to get. :good:

Sorry i only skimmed through it earlier.

erm, i am not totally sure, i would not like to spend a lot, which sounds silly i know. I would say £150 tops.

when you know what your after check out your local free paper mine usually has loads of diff tanks for sale
regards scot :good:

OK, for that money I would recommend looking on ebay, there's generally second hand set up's with all the equipment etc going for quite a reasonable price, also look in the buy/sell/swap forum for people selling up.

Yep I agree MW - ebay is a great place to get a second hand tank from - alot of them come with the filters/heaters etc you will need, some even come with gravel/sand substrate, airstones, pumps as well. For a good reasonable size starter tank -anything from 60 litres upwards to 200 Litres you can normally pick up a bargain below the £100 - £150 mark :good:

You could also try freecycle, I know some people who have picked up some good tanks for absolutely nothing from there :)

Or Aquarist classifieds :)

thanks

i think i have encoutered a problem though

I don't know where to put the tank, i mean this is my room

now, apart from the tank i have to fit a 42" tv in here also

possible on here

i could mount the Tv? or put the tank there?

planning is everything!

wall mount the tv and put the tank on a low stand underneath it.

Well, I hate to say this but from what I can see there is no "perfect" place in that room. The best spots will likely put direct sunlight on the tank which can make for algae problems. A good solid hood and a dark background could likely head some problems off.

I think your desk is actually your best bet. What you're looking at is a 20 to 30 gallon tank which will weigh in around 200 to 300 pounds (90 to 135 kilos). While it won't be pretty to begin with it would be easy to cut a couple of 2 x 4's to length and use them to support the desktop and take the tank load. It's not a great solution but it would work.

Alternately you can mount the TV on the wall and place the tank beside the window or under it. That would be the optimum choice.
