Hi,

Does anyone use an external heater?

I like the idea of using one for the obvious aesthetic benefit of the heater not being in the aquarium.

I have a Hydor inline heater on the outflow line of my canister filter.

They cost a bit, but it's one less piece of equipment in the tank and it keeps the temperature very steady.

Much the same as above,
Eheim Professional ThermoFilters

I was looking into an Eheim Professional ThermoFilters, but decided to go for seperate Eheim external filter and Hydor heater instead.

Two reasons

1. The wattage on the thermofilters were very low, around 150-180 W, just didn't think that was big enough for a 66 Gal.
2. In case of failure, replacing just a heater or filter would be cheaper then another new ThermoFilter.

I'm looking at possibly buying a Hydor external heater.

I have a Fluval 204 external filter and the Fluval piping is quite large. I looked at the Hydor external heater in a LFS today and the piping and inlet/outlets were allot smaller.

I think the Eheim external filter tubing is a lot smaller than Fluval external filters and consequently the Hydor external heater would be easier to install?

Has anyone installed a Hydor external heater with a Fluval external filter?

How would I connect the two types of tubing?

Hi,Andy.
 diameter than the Hydor connector but if you purchase some pipe clips from a plumbers merchant or DIY store it works fine. Just make sure you tighten then up properly, I didn't and had a bit of a flood when I set the filter going!
The heater worked fine whilst the tank was cycling but when I was ready to add fish I noticed the temperature had dropped so I put in my spare heater and turned the Hydor off. I haven't had chance to test it yet as I will need to get some more tubing if I have to remove it to return it to the shop. This, I think is the biggest draw back, you have to cut your filter pipe to fit the heater then if something is wrong you need to replace the pipe.

Sorry about my post, I deleted the first part by mistake!lol
I meant to say I have an Eheim external & Hydor in line, the Eheim hose diameter is slightly bigger than the Hydor connections.

Hi,

I use hydor heaters on both my Rio 240s with fluval filters. They work well but I found that due to the ribbed nature of the tubing I found that I couldn't connect it to the heater without it leaking. To overcome this I bought a couple of extra fluval rubber adapters (the ones that connect the tubing to the intake stem etc), as sold here

http://www.fishandfins.co.uk/Fluval-104-204.htm

and used them.

Hope this helps.

There are two different models of 200W Hydor heaters, the 200 fits 1/2" tubing and the 201 fits 5/8" tubing. Maybe you were looking at the smaller diameter model?
