How do these work? does the tank need to have holes drilled for one or what? also inline heaters again can some one show me some and how they work? im assuming the heater goes inbetween the tank and filter?

Not really with you here mate...

Erm, no need for holes in anything, a pump in the external filter sucks water out of the tank using a hose placed in the tank, throught the filter, back out through another hose and back into the tank. Is that what you wanted to know?

As for in-line heaters, yes, they are attached inline with one of the hoses I mentioned above.

Does that help some?

ah right, i just assumed it would look crappy with pipes dangling over the place

well in that case im getting an external filter and inline heater for my next tank :D :D

although how do you control the heat on the inline heaters? do they have a thermostat in them too?

sorry like i said i've never even seen one before  just thought i would look into them as a possibility for my next tank :good:

my next tank is likely to be 48x24x24 so any suggestions as to what filter i could use? also would the inline heater be enough to keep the tank warm?

...Or how's about a filter heater combo, Such as the Eheim 'Thermo' Pro I filter, #2329. They cost about £240 & will cater for a tank size up to 600L (the dimentions you give are for a 450L tank).

Yes, the heaters will use thermostats.

Take a look Here for one type

Thats more like it

The inline heater works by you setting the temp required on a dial on the outside of the unit.

The water pases through the heater on it s way from the filter to the tank and is heated as it passes through the heater.

It has a sort of glass chamber which is wrapped with a thin layer which has the heating cables in it (more like a peice of plastic film with circuitry on it) and ten has foam insulating it.

Because of the glass part of it they are very fragile and I bought 2 before I got one not broken at the third attempt!!
