Hey guys and gals,

My tank is 40 gal and currently cycling, I'm running a fluval 205. Its claims to cope with a 40 gal/200 litre tank. The flow seams a little slow.

Do you think it will be ok or should i change it now?

the manufacturers recommended tank/filter sizes are always a bit optimistic.

if you've a 40 gal tank, look for a filter rated for a 50/60 gal minimum. more if you're planning to stock messy fish or a heavy fish load

Absolutely I agree with Miss Wiggle. Definitely always buy a filter that can cope (as advertised) with at least half as much more. So 1.5 times what it says you need. I actually double mine.

I run a 205 on a 54litre and it works lovely. I also run a 204 on a 20 gal and wouldn't want to go much larger. The LPH that most manufacturers quote are usually without media, so with media it is less LPH. I believe Tetratec quote LPH with media, but I haven't confirmed this. If you can afford a larger filter its always worth doing.

I only have runned on a internal built in filter for 4 years and all is fine but i heard if you have a big strong canistor filter you can survive 6 months without cleaning the filter

I have no problem getting the fluval 305 but i have one question tho; can i use the same tube and or will i have to completly remote the current one?

If they use the same diameter tubing, then by all means, use the old hosing on the new filter. If it uses the next size up, then you will have to prime it fully again.
