at the monet I have a fluval 3+ and it has a habit of slowing down or stopping all together.. and was considing an external filter but if been told that that no better theh the internal ones...

what do u think??

Have you cleaned the filter lately, the impellor might want a clean, remove it then get a toothbrush and rub inside the area where the impellor goes, it can get blocked up, i run it under the tap to get the muck out.
Also are your sponges really mucked up.

They can be noisier but obviously take up no space in your tank so are more aesthetically pleasing. If they leak (highly unlikely if set up and maintained properly) then you can cause a lot of mess and wet carpet, something which doesnt happen with an internal filter.
