i have an external filter Eheim 2215 i think, just put this on my 120lt tank which is over kill, lol. but have done this to get it ready to put on my bigger tank. at first i had the spray bar on straight and that made the tank like a jacuzzi, so i moved it at a slight angle so only a few of the spray bars hole's were working, the rest were underwater. i then had an idea of taking the plastic stop off the end, this made a nice flow across the top off the, like a power head.

if the outlet pipe is almost under water is this bad for the filter? i couldn't find any thing in the manual about this and i don't want to bugger my filter up?

(also i forgot to meantion that i am still running my old filter too, standard Fluval).

I found with my eheim external, putting extra holes in the spray bar reduced the current considerably.
I also tried taking the end of the spray bar off, but found putting extra holes in much more helpful. What I did was put holes in the opposite side so that the current is directed both towards and away from the glass. Just use a low power drill, or even just a sharp knive, and carve the holes

i did try it pointing at the glass to, it was better but still a little to powerful. i'm sure the spray bar will be fine in the other tank, i think it should sit along the side so i should have a nice even flow across the water.

thanks for replys just wanted to check that it wouldn't back up or some thing.

Current is good, fish like it :) dont be afraid to have a strong flow.

I have several of the eheims, and all of my output spray bars are fully submerged, and I haven't had any problems at all. And yes most fish like the current, it depends on what species you have.
