Been out of the hobby for a few years and just setting up a tank with tetratec ex600. I seem to remember external filters can malfunction and drain the tank, so it's a good idea to have the inlet quite high, so enough water will remain if this happens.
Is this correct or did I dream it?

This filter is a canister.  As far as I know, the only time a canister filter will drain a tank is if one of the the hose connections should come apart, or the filter somehow leak.  When you clean the filter, make sure the head is replaced so the seal is tight, and check around the filter when you turn it on to ensure there are no leaks.

The filter intake (inlet) should be close to the substrate, about 4 to 6 inches above the substrate at that area.  The filter return (water returning to the tank) should be at or very close to the surface, and where possible (such as with canister filters) at the opposite end of the tank lengthwise.  This set-up ensures the best overall flow within the tank.

Byron.
