Ext Filters And Sand

does anyone think sand could damage the impeler of an external filter or could it make the filter noisier ?
i want to use sand in my new aquarium but was thinking it might not be worth it for this reason.

well it could if you let it, thers no need for the intake pipe to be near enuff to the sand to allow this to happen tho, but as for fine partticles when doing a water change etc, with reg maintenence you will be ok, the impeller has to be cleaned o a reg basis, so u will see the sand and be able to catch it before it does any damage
