Excel Substitute > Metricide 14 > Cidex Plus 14/28 > Cidex Opa > Steranios 2%

Hi everyone,

Cidex Plus contain alkaline glutaraldehyde.
Metricide 14 contain buffered glutaraldehyde.

1. What is alkaline glutaraldehyde and
how can we tell that it is good 4 planted aq'.

2. Is the alkaline glutaraldehyde in CidexPlus
is buffered as well just like Metricide 14.

3. I read the the MSDS of CidexPlus but it said
nothing about other components that may be in
CidexPlus and may be relevant 4 planted aq'.

Here in Israel there is no Metricide 14 and
I could hardly find so far CidexPlus 28.

4. Cidex (MSDS).

5. Metricide 14 (MSDS).

6. There is other product here called Cidex Opa (MSDS)
but it build with ortho-phthalaldehyde and I wonder
if that will be good as CidexPlus 28/Metricide 14.

7. There is other product here called STERANIOS 2% (MSDS)
It is also 2% glutaraldehyde solution and I wonder
if that will be good as CidexPlus 28/Metricide 14.

As for STERANIOS 2% I read that it contains:
Alcohol denat, Aqua (Water), Glycerin, Acrylates/C10-30 Alkyl Acrylate Crosspolymer,
Ethoxydiglycol Oleate, Bisabolol, PEG-4 Caprylic/Capric Glycerides, Aminomethylpropanol,
Phenoxyethanol, CI 42051, Parfum (Fragrance).
BUT NONE OF THOSE are mentioned at the product MSDS.

Any comment will be appreciated.

Percentage means nothing, you need concentration, these products are used for sterilising medical equipment and generally contain things other than just glutaraldehyde, stick with what's best for the sake of your plants, unless you're willing to analyse each substance in order to find its concentration.

i have seen a few people attempting this...just be careful mixing these. :good:

as above though % isn't really good to go on.

Very interesting, I'll still rather get my carbon from CO2 though .

I'm not totally sure why you want to use anything other than Excel and its competitors? In massive aquariums where that would be too expensive, wouldn't pressurised CO2 actually be cheaper than buying bulk quantities of medical-strength disinfectants? Dont try this with shrimp haha.

Or is all of this just out of interest? :)

Thank U StandbySetting, ianho & three-fingers.

01. Excel is estimated to contain 1.5-2% glutaraldehyde.

02. Excel is known 2b good for neutralized curtain algae.

03. Excel is also known 2b a good Carbon source for plants,
of course it is not equivalent to Pressurized CO2, one may say
that Excel is 6 (at 1-10 scale) relatively to Pressurized CO2.

04. Excel is expensive for daily use from 60L and north.

05. Many people use Metricide 14 or Cidex Plus 14 and
getting the same results just like if they would have
choose to use Excel, One Sample from tons of similar.

06. After recheck with chemist at our local importer I found out
that the weird list as for what STERANIOS 2% contains is wrong
and it contains only 2% buffered glutaraldehyde and water.

07. Just before run STERANIOS 2% on 300L aq' I will try to get
small amount of the solution to be tested on small aq' with
some plants and monitor the results, 2% glutaraldehyde has
been proven already to be k for fauna except some plants.

08. Here I have 300L LowTech with no Pressurized CO2.

09. I have no plans to go HighTech with Pressurized CO2,
double the light, PH meter and the rest of HighTech scene.

10. Annual Excel dosing is about $100.

12. Annual STERANIOS 2% dosing is about $20.

13. Metricide 14 or Cidex Plus 14 are at the same ratio +/-.
