Hey everyone,

I am setting up some smaller betta tanks for my two sisters, not to worry though I will make sure they look after them properly and teach them everything they need to know. I was thinking of using some 5 gallon tanks. I have read in several posts people talking about cheap 25watt heaters that walmart sells. I am not very close to a walmart, its about a 35min drive, and that one does not carry fish, but has plently of pet supplies, I have been there many many times over the years and have never seen these small 25watt heaters.

The next walmart is about an hours drive for me, which I may do as I am not srue where else to look. I have also looked in several LFS and online sites and cant find any small heaters.

Do your local walmarts carry them? Do you know of anywhere else that carrys them?

Thanks guys.

My LFS has them..... I would also think (assume) that any chain petstore near you would have them. I'd use the phone book and make calls since it sounds each place is a long drive.

I do live in a small small town, not very much near us really. Maybe tomorrow I'll head up to my LFS and see if they car order them. Although I think they would over charge me big time, even though there fish are cheap, some of there hardware is a pit on the pricey side.. and this is the only local fish store near me. Once a month I head down to big al's, that takes me just over an hour. I have looked several times and never found any, and there online site doesnt have on either.

Maybe I should phone the other walmarts and check with them.

Also, what should I expect to pay for these from walmart? And if you LFS has them how mcuh are they there?

Thanks

If you can't find a 25watt, use a 50watt. I know there suppost to be for 10 gallons but they work fine on 5 gallons. I have one in my 5 1/2 gallon and I've never had a problem with overheating. The lfs suggested it because I can never find 25watt heaters.

Hi ccg :)

Big Al's Online carries an excellent brand of 25 watt heater.

What you want to avoid is getting any heaters that do not have built in thermostats so you can control the temperature. Those are the ones that have two settings: on and off, and they can cause overheating. When it comes to heaters, that's not the place to try to save money. Go for a good one. :D

I also found that petsolutions.com has very good prices. They had the best price I found online for the fluval 304 filters I put on my 75 gallon, about $7 lower than big al's or petsmart.

Wow thanks for the adive guys.

So.... apprantly I missed the 25watt heater on big al's site.. guess I need look harder next time. Thanks Inchworm.

MegTheFish, thanks for the suggestion. I was considering using 50 watts as I have a couple of them and when I setup my one 10 gallon the 50watt heater seem to take a long time for it to heat the tank up, so the the lower setting will not likely over heat a smaller tanks.

And thanks for the site rdd1952, i'll take a browse around and see what they have.

Thanks everyone for the help, I appreciate it.
