I am thinking of taking the hood off of my 5.5 gallon (it's a bit bigger, than the tank, it looks stupid) and just keeping the light piece on. Now i was thinking, if water evaporates will moisture get to the lights and cause some electricution? That would suck.

Oh yeah, only white clouds are in there, and the water level will be lower, so they won't jump, and if they do they won't make it out.

Water getting into the light bulb can probably cause it to short or can cause electricution...Remember electric + water= shock....I would remove the canopy, if you want just go buy a glass canopy so you can sit your light on top of it, it shouldn't cause you too much money.....Just my 2 cents

Modern flourescent lights will not have a problem with the evaporation. Two of my three tanks do not have lids, they just have lights suspended over them, and it's never given me a problem. I do have a bit of moisture in one of the bulbs, but it hasn't seemed to effected the light. Electrectution you certainly don't have to worry about, especially if you are using aquarium standard canopies -they're protected.

I actually dropped an entire canopy into a tank, lights on, plugged in. Nothing happened - the lights turned out. I unplugged it, removed it, dried it, and when I turned it on again it resumed working normally.
