Hi all,

Sadly my vet has confirmed that I have fish TB in my tank. There are apparently 2 strains. I had to give up a male Ram for analysis last week, which cost a small fortune too !
I have a stock of 12 at present.
He has advised me that it would be best to get rid of all stock & then disinfect everything before starting over again.
I'm not sure whether to do this or not as only 3 guppies are looking poor & the rest are seemingly healthy at present. I was wondering whether I should just let them die off naturally?

I have been told that fish TB carries a risk to humans through water/ skin contact, usually where cuts or abrasions are on the skin. In humans fish TB is apparent as a skin irritation/ raised lumps etc. It is treatable but somewhat lengthy to treat if caught. I don't know much more about it at this time.

Has anyone else had TB in their stock? If so what did you do?
What are your opinions? should I get rid of all or let them die off?
This would mean I would need to be exceptionally careful about my cleanliness after doing any tank maintenance if I keep the stock.

thoughts appreciated.
Thanks
Viv

Sorry, i suprised he isnt trying an antibiotic first, it can work but not if there spines are already bent.

Definitely wear gloves!! my grandma got a serious infection and almost lost her hand from a betta with TB...

Personally I would try to treat them and see what happens.. I've never really been a fan of giving up and euthanising.

if i were you i would get rid of them. why take a chance when you could be in deep trouble and have huge hospital bills just from a dozen fish?

Hi vivh,

If your suspicion about the fish having fish TB has been confirmed by a vet, and he advised you to get rid of them, don't wait any longer; destroy them now. This is a very serious disease when humans are effected and it's not worth taking a chance with. The odds against ridding the bacteria from your tank are slim, but you can always start again.

If you scroll down to the bottom of this article, you will find an article by someone who caught this disease and is telling about how it effected her. If this is the same bacteria that is in your tank, please don't take any chances with your health because you have a kind heart and care about your fish. It's just not worth the risk.
