Anyone know if these external heaters are any good? They are supposed to be spliced into the return hose on a canister filter and heat more evenly as the warmed water goes thru the spray bar. Is there a chance it could leak?

Hi,

I've got the Hydor ETH 300 on one of my Juwel Vision 180's (40gal) - fitted it about 3 weeks ago and am very happy with it. Easy to fit, even easier to adjust the temperature, and no leaks (been keeping a close eye on it) - you push the filter pipes onto the heater either side, then screw some caps from the heater onto the pipes to secure it fully. Am planning on getting a second one for my other 180.

I have a Hydor external as well - but the 200w watt version.

I'm very pleased with it so far, no leaks and very easy to install.

I ordered the 200 by mistake, didn't realise that it only fitted 12mm tubing, i've got 16mm - boy was that an annoying 3 day wait for the 300 to arrive, lol

I ended up ordering one last nite. I got the strongest one available. A 300 watt. I know you're supposed to go about 5 watts per gal. but I was told that these heat more efficently and a lower wattage will do. But you guys think a 300 watt. is strong enough for 110 gal.?

I think the 300w is rated for up to 66g tanks - so i guess that you would need 2 - but that would only work if you had 2 externals.

I would try it and see what happens.

They are fab heaters. Being using the 300w for nearly 2 years now. A very good tip is to put a piece of tape across the temperature control dial as it it very easy to accidently knock it.
