Established Filter Media

I finally found a forum that's for people in my area that keep fish. They are no where near as helpful or friendly as you guys here but I needed to find someone local for established media. I asked if someone could spare some filter media to help my fishless cycle along. I had two people say they would, the one that's closest to me said he would squeeze an established sponge out for me, the other that's a bit further away said he would give me an established sponge.

My question is, would the sqeezings be enough or should I just try to get both?

If it were me, I would go for the established sponge, and thank the other one very much for their offer. The sponge will cycle much faster as the bacteria will already be attached, have created a biofilm and be ready to go. The sponge "squeezings" are a nice offer, but won't be nearly as effective as the sponge itself.

That's what I figured. I still want to see his fish room that he's building so I will still probably go and just figure out when a good time is to meet up with the guy that's willing to give me a sponge. Thanks again Eagle

Hey I'd do both - certainly get the filter as that is the rolls royce but a little squeeze can't hurt (ohh matron ). I would tend to pass some libation / gift back to the donors to thank them and replace the media which they're giving you (or at least offer) but that's just me. All good Karma Miles

I did, I offered both some sponge filters I probably will never use again and plenty of fish bags that I used to use when I was breeding and selling fish.

I will hopefully be getting the squeezings Thursday as long as my boyfriend gets off work early enough. Excited to see his fish room, 1,500 gallons of water. Sounds like a dream to me lol

Yea but he's got all the fancy plumbing, water storage drums and all that nice stuff. He works from home like I do so when you have the time and the money (I lack the money part lol) it's not too bad especially with a set up like his.
