Hi, today I was told by my LFS that i trust the most that the MultiFix we were using was stressing out our fish (and it is). He suggested only using Melafix only as it doesn't burn off the coating on the fish :grr: which has been the cause of their stress. In so doing made me realise I still have so much to learn...sigh...so Please lets start making a list of great meds, both herbal and the other and see what is best. How much do you use it etc, like melafix - do you always have some in your water? There was also a Liquid mineral product that was quite expensive, does anyone know anything about that?

Cheers, and thanks in advance :D

I tend to add melafix in half doses when I do my water changes. The standard doses are:

So you use melafix as a general tonic every water change? Do you always have healthy fish as a result?

use meds only when u need to it should be used as a last resort as all meds do dammage to fish (exept for water treatments) u should alsways stock some form of meds that treat a wide range of problems just encase but if ur fish are health and ur tank is well maintained then u shouldn't need it.

hi there,
we use melafix only when we see a problem - like minor patches of fungus or the very beginnings of finrot on a fish, we try this first & if it doesnt seem to be helping we try something else ( like esha 2000 ). melafix seems to work for some people & others arent so keen but it seems to work on fungus & finrot in our tank. its probably not a good idea to use a med unless you have a problem with something. & its better with a lot of diseases to move the fish out into a little hospital tank if you can. ( except with something like ich where you need to treat the whole tank & melafix does not work with ich) i do occasionally add waterlifes paragon as a general tonic though :)

Yep. Big problem in my tank. Ich on two of my soft body friends, the catfish and salmon tail catfish. The rest are getting better, except for my dwarf gourami, who has a big gaping hole in his mouth. Just noticed as I have been watching for stress/sick fish just in case. It seems like an injury, but it might be something else. :(

could your gourami have mouthrot??? similar to fungussy & finrot probs & there is some good meds out there ask your lfs, we had this prob with a red eye tetra - looked like his mouth was dissolving & getting 'bigger' if you know what i mean.

It definately looks bigger according to hubby. I only noticed it today, it's only visible on one side, and he's always hiding in the follage, of which there is a plenty... It looks healthy pink which makes me think that it could be a wound due to feeding frenzys in that tank (there seems to be one with special foods in there like we put in a prawn etc). I thought if it were more sinister looking it might be rot of some sort. Unsure. I'm a newbie at fishkeeping really. Cheers, Xan
