Errrrrr! Stupid Canisters! Help Please.

hello
now i,m converting my 42 gal into an amazon biotope so i am removing undergravel filters and keeping power filter and just installed a new canister filter.
its running smoothly but the two crucial things i wanna ask are:
1. do i place the input and output pipes near the water surface or deep.
2. and how do i keep the pipes in place and keep them from squishing and blocking the water,s path?
please give me a website or something with a pictorial on how to fit them with normal pipes from the hardware store and not the ones that came with them.

p.s:this is very important for me now so please kindly answer this question and then ask why not the ones that came with it etc.

input: at least halfway down, or near the bottom.
output: near the top to create a small ripple

usually you get something to hold the pipes in place, if you dont have any then try these:
