I have no problem with "newbies" trying to give stocking advice in public posts, because other members can correct mistakes which helps people learn. Trying to pass out information in private messages however means that no one can tell you are wrong if you are. That means you don't learn, and people could possibly be stuck with advice that is poor.
If you look at how long I've owned my tank, or the number of fish I've personally owned...I am a "newbie". I spend several hours a day reading forum posts, learning which members give good advice (and thus who to trust), and doing my own research on various species. Sadly enough I understand some things that people with twice (or more) of my own post count do not, but I'm not foolish enough to think that I am an expert in anything yet.
