Enter Now

It's time for Fishforums bimonthly Fish of the Month Contest. This month we are featuring all freshwater fish but are especially seeking oddballs. If you have a cool fish you would like to share, we hope will enter one of them into the contest.
Please note that if you won a previous FOTM contest, you must skip one FOTM contest before you can enter a different fish in another FOTM contest.

RULES:
A picture (no videos) uploaded via our "attach files" tool with a handwritten note held in front of the fish stating "December 2025 TFF FOTM" is required to validate your entry. If you wish, you may also post a second recent picture without the note attached. If you do post a 2nd pic, that will be the pic that will be used for the poll. The picture(s) should focus on one fish.
Upload the picture(s) in FULL SIZE using upload controls in "reply" area.
  • UNDER the picture(s), post any information about the fish such as species, age, tank mates, tank size, name you gave it , unique traits, feedings, etc.
  • Submit the entry
  • Latest date for you to enter the contest is December 14th at 4 PM ET or once we have 12 entries--whichever comes first. Any entry posted after we have 12 entries will be deleted and they will be asked to enter the next FOTM contest.
  • Winner will be decided by fellow members via a poll which starts after the entry period has ended.
  • Please note: you are not allowed to have friends or family join TFF for the main purpose of voting for your entry
What do I win?
  • You will get a cool banner in your profile area noting that you are a winner of Fish of the Month.
  • Your winning entry will be showcased in a "FOTM Winner" thread where members can congratulate you.
  • Your winning entry will be added to our Wall of Fame
You are allowed to change your vote if you wish.
Comments about any specific entry are not allowed and will promptly be deleted. This thread will be cleaned up frequently for readability.

You know I tried to take a picture of one of my unusual black and white catfishes this morning but they wouldn't sit still. I was thinking maybe i'll have to do a video to get a clear image but of course your rules don't allow video. Oh well - the aquarium they are in is not very pretty one - i barely maintain it beyond weekly large water changes.

Hum. Maybe i can get my keri to snarl again those are always nice pictures ;)

This is my glass knifefish (Eigenmannia Virsecens). I've had her for about four months. She lives in my planted fluval 125 with some albino bronze cory, cherry barbs, harlequin rasbora and some other peaceful fish. She spends most of her day under the massive lotus, hanging around with my glass catfish. I feed her a mixture of flakes, pellets and frozen foods normally at night. I tend to target feed her, as she often gets shies away from the boisterous cory. She's very interesting to watch, especially when she swims backwards, she also seems to have a higher level of intelligence than the average fish.

This is my eldest male Daisys Blue Ricefish (Oryzias woworae). Currently living with a group of other Daisys in my 60L cube and a thriving colony of Neocardina shrimp. I've had this fish since July 2024, and it is the father to around 3/4 of the tank population. Sadly, one eye has gone cloudy due to a battle wound, but this doesn't seem to impact the fish. Feeding is done every day in small amounts using my 4 pellet combo mix. I do treat the fish to frozen copepods as well. I usually find this fish in the morning, sparring with the other males, which is an interesting watch as the colours really come through.

This is Candy Man whom Iโ€™m nominating for fish of the month. He is a Czech-derived morph of Apistogramma cacatuoides. The Czech breeders call the morph lemon candy. Candy Man lives in a 20 gallon, densely planted tank with a female named Candy. She is quite a bit smaller and completely lemon yellow in coloration. The two fish appear to enjoy each otherโ€™s company and are gentle with each other. I got lucky. There are 4 coconut caves in the tank if the pair choose to spawn. Candy Man and Candy share the tank with 10 Glowlight tetras.

I think this will be my entry - i wanted one of more really strange catfishes but none of them wanted to be in the photo - oh wait let me double check mr. whiptail and see what he sez - he tried to swap the phone out of my hand but alas he failed so we have this picture with a slight blurr to the tail as he swings at me:

For those who want to look him up his species is: Sturisomatichthys aureu; not sure how adaptable he is to tank water but i keep him under true blackwater conditions at around 76. He not quite as friendly as my other whiptails (not picture for this contest but can be found here: https://www.fishforums.net/threads/...-from-the-past-week-or-so.491884/post-4383924.

I keep in a 100 gallon very 'complex' aquarium with my a. sp winkelfleck. I have him with a few other cats of various types as well as the winkelfleck, morse code tetra and hummingbird tetra (a very small tetra that spends all day buzzing around in well almost the same spot). The aquarium is densely planted with a few open spots like the drift wood pictured above (this was the aquarium i entered in the last fotm contest if you want to look it up). I was going to enter this fish but it isn't a cat and the mods wanted a cat:

The below fish is amazing from the wild without human mucking around to change his natural form or colour. He is also very friendly and loves to tell bedside stories to his tank mates.

Oh well i'll add a date one of these soon dates hopefully before the 15th but who knows. I wish i could just write the date on the photo tht would be easier than finding a piece of paper and working pen which i seem to constantly have walking off and hiding in a hole somewhere when i need it. Unfortunately i don't have many holes in my home so it takes me a long time to find the new one it made to hide in.

Check in the sofa. Pens tend to bed down under the cushions.
