Hello all, Hope you all are well. I made the major mistake of buying aquarium and fish at the same time and I am suffering through cycling the aquarium. I am a newbie at this. I thing I am actually a couple steps below newbie. But I am reading everything I can and you all have been a great help. I consider this an emergency! How do I know if my aquarium is getting enough oxygen for my babies. I have one Betta and five danio. My filter is a whisper 20 and there are air bubbles on the top of the water. Is this normal? Or do i need an air pump?
Thank you for all your help! Thank God I dye my hair because I think I would be gray by now! The tank was set up two weeks ago yesterday.

If there wasn't enough 02 in the water the fish would be gasping at the top of the tank, if the water ripples at the top there in enough 02, but you could add an airstone as livebearers and some shoaling fish like to play in the flow.

How funny about the grey hair. lol

Anyhow ...
I'm not an expert, by any means, on cycling, although i'm going through it right now in my 10 gallon with 4 betta girls.

As Wilder said, I would proably put in some sort of bubble bar or bubble disc to add air for them, but I would say that from what I've heard, the air that is created by the surface agitation should be sufficient. they do really also like to play in the bubbles. :)

How are your betta and danios getting along in there?
Are you testing things like ammonia and nitrites, nitrates, etc. and doing water changes? I'm doing daily testing and while it's a chore, it's well worth it!

my Betta and Danios are getting along just fine. Sometimes I actually think the betta is actually playing with thm. I take daily readings as well as daily water changes of about 25% . Last reading was Ammonia .25, Nitrites .25, and Nitrates anywhere from 0-5.0.
I canot wait until this cycling is over. My Betta is suffering from Ich so i raised the temp and added salt. Seems to help. But now he looks like he has a fungus under his mouth. Don't know if I should treat while cycling. He was a rescue from a gross pet store so he probably came with all these problems. Also has fin rot too. Poor thing.

For the fungus under the mouth try some salt baths on the fish.

The fact that you have nitrite and nitrate shows that cycling is progressing. You will need to treat the betta ASAP as Ich will kill him pretty quickly if not treated.

Also has fin rot too.

Fin Rot is generally a result of poor water conditions or stress. The cycling problem could be the cause or the flow from the filter could cause problems. Betta tend to like calm water. From my experience, fin rot seems to be a problem with bettas in general since they are almost all fins and tail.
