Two things. Firstly, does the water temperature/condition etc have any bearing on the sex of a brood od fry as I seem to get a very high percentage (upto 90%!) males in most broods.
Also, to get a set up that replicates the type of 'scene' that endlers live in the wild what should one have in the tank. Should it be rocky or woody or both and what plants (available to purchase) would be suitable?

Regards,
Bruce

well the first question. the temperature does make a difference. what is your temp. i think its higher temperature for males and cooler for females.

and live bearers are from the amazon mainly so my guess is lots of grassy plants along with a few leafy ones. and carpeting plants for measure

I find the lower the temp the more males i get.
But it's not that simple.

They are from north Venezuela map below, red arrow shows the location.

found these fish in warm (81 degrees F) , hard water which is very green with unicellular algae which, along with other plankton such as diatoms, nekton, and filamentous algae make up part of their food

Hi Guys,
Thanks for the reponses. So higher temperatures can mean more males or more females..... obviously it isn't that simple as you suggest!

I had realised that the fish lived in green algaed (!) waters, as someone said to me afterall thats why the males are so colourful so they can be seen.

Also thanks for the map I knew they are from Venezuala but not from which part.

Regards,
Bruce

Depends who u talk to i find it the other way, lower temp more males

In my tank I get more males with the lower temps also. If I keep the tank at 78 I will get more females.
