Hi all, been a while since I posted, loving the new site :)

Anyway, to make it short - my mum decided to buy a new fish for her tank, that already has one of the same breed and a parrot fish in there.

The other fish gets on fine with the parrot fish, but almost immediately after releasing this one into the tank, we noticed the parrot fish seemed to be chasing it a little, we thought it was just perhaps curious. Stress starts.

Anyway, this continues for a while, i try to make a "cave" like area where the fish can hide and calm down, this doesn't work, and it ends up with the parrot fish grabbing this one by the tail and dragging it to the back/bottom of the tank, I quickly got up, shoved my hannd in and got her to drop the fish.

I put it in a bag (this was a few hours ago) and have just brought the fish home with me, to hopefully save and live in my tank which is all smaller fishies.

The thing is, since it's poor attack the little thing hasn't been floating upright, upside down and breathing heavily in the bag, atm it's managed to upright itself in the bag in my tank.

Can anyone give any advice? Shall I leave it in the bag overnight in my tank and hope for the best? I really hope it survives, and mum was feeling extremely guilty and upset that this poor fish had gone through so much in so little time.

Thanks in advance.

What kind of fish is this? If your not sure of name try describing it, colour, body shape, where does it swim (top middle or bottom) etc

I imagine it was some kind of cichlid and the parrot fish would probably have seen it as a potential intruder in its territory. I could perhaps of calmed down at some point but if its with you now it will be safe :)

Depending on type of fish they sometimes have little hissy fits Im not trying to dismiss any kind of medical issue but they can just sulk sometimes. I would let them out of the bag as they are very open in the bag which will stress them I imagine they will want to just want to find a dark corner and calm down.

Dont know why but I cant help but think this is going to be an oscar just have a google and have a look :)

Thanks for the reply.

It's not on oscar or a big fish, it's a bit bigger than a molly, with a fin coming from just behind its eyes all the way down and over its tail, it's quite a long-shaped fish.

There was a male one in the tank already at mums, guessing this one was female which is why the parrot fish grabbed it badly.

I will try letting it out the bag now and hope it doesn't just flop over.

Just let her out of the bag, she just free-falled all the way to the bottom and is now sat on the gravel on her side.. so not good, perhaps wont make it :(

What colours are they? Is it a Kribensis?

This one was Orange, the other was black/silver.. they are also white.

thank god few

Severum? Swordtail? Did your mum check with the store before she bought it?

It may be a swordtail! It's annoying as I was with her and knew the name well, but it's just gone out of my head completely! argh!

Going to bed now, hope she's well in the morning and not dead :(

Poor thing is still in the same spot thismorning upside-down and breathing....

Not much else I can do?

sounds to me like a swordtail, nice little fish....personally i wudnt place such small fish with parrots or oscars.

does the fish have a loss of balance, swimming upside down or on its side?
if so it could possibly be a swim bladder injury as a result of fighting,
if it wont sort its self out, there isnt anything you can do for the fish.

its best to keep the tank light off, to help it calm down and lowers the stress level for the fish.
if it dont recover and still hasnt died...maybe consider "euthanasia".....best for the fish.

good luck! :D
