I just woke up and turned on the light of the aquarium, and my peacock eel is laying at the bottom of the tank. He has a couple red sores on him. He's on his side, and looking around the tank, lifting his head. It's really sad! What should I do? It'll be 2.5 hours before the petstore opens!

are there other fish in there with him
( if so they might of nipped him)

do about 20% water change

whats your stats

is the ill eating ok

He's in with other fish, but I don't know what to do to seperate him...this happened at the exact same time I used my spare tank for a rescue of two parrot cichlids...the only thing I have for him is a kritter keeper, and I don't know how I'd heat it or filter it! Would moving him to that stress him more then leaving him in the tank?

They may have nipped him....I have him in with corys, gouramis, swords, a feather fin cat (2 inches), tetras, platies, and snails though....

I did a 25% water change last night and tested my water, everything was good, but it was slightly hard....but I have wood in the tank, and everyone I know in this city has hard water because thats how our cities water is...

Oh, and I've just had the eel for two days. The other two eels at the petstore, I found out yesterday, died three days after coming in. I don't know if he has been eating...I squirted all sorts of food at him wiht a syringe, he seemed to be eating the brine shrimp, but I couldn't be sure...

i would think that moving the eel might give stress to it.

i would say do 20% a day just to be on the safe side.

does the red marks look like a graze or a nip or what

does the eel get along woth the other fish ok

He seemed to get along with the other ones, they seemed to be a bit intimidated by him, except for the cories which would bump him aside to reach their algae pellets. haha. The synodontis generally avoids it, I beleive...

The red marks, from what I could tell, looked like scratches almost... one is like, round, and the other is a scratch in a triangle shape...very red and sore looking. He was laying on his side, but looking around, then swam away and is upright behind a rock.

that's possible, I'll remove some of the rougher rocks....

What should I buy for it? I'll go to the store as soon as it opens

Sorry to hear about your fish. You may want to remove the rocks (just in case), and maybe dose the tank with soma Melafix to prevent an infection from setting in. It may also take some stress off the fish to add some more places to hide if they are lacking.

:( He died.

I added some melafix, and came back down to check on him at around 9:30...he was laying on his side, dead, and with more red marks on him and an area where it looks like he was "sandpapered" down to white...its odd...and very sad :( I was attached to him already....0_0 The same thing happened to the ones at the store...what could it have been? Was it something in my tank, or that I did?

Sorry just reading this bless him, R.I.P, did it also look like there was any bleeding beneath the skin.

Not the writer of this information.

Ulcers- Ulcers are open sores located on the fish's body. Ulcers are sores on the body caused by bacterial infection. You need to make very sure your water quality is immaculate. Check your pH and Ammonia as well as your Nitrite readings. Ulcers usually are caused by the Aeromonas bacteria or more rarely Pseudomonas bacteria. The ulceration may appear with red abscesses, or red edges around the ulcer. In some cases it can become rather large and expose muscles. Symptoms: The fish has one or more open sores on its body or at the base of its fins. The sore has a red abscess or red edges. The fish may also have red fin edges or fin rot. They may exhibit lack of appetite and sluggish behavior. Treatment: Usually antibiotics are needed and this is done by a series of injections. ( A vet would need to see the fish and give you the necessary prescription). However this is not always the best option for individuals and a product by Aquarium Pharmaceuticals has a great product called Mela Fix that has shown great results in the healing of ulcers. It is easy to use and does not create issues with the water quality. (back to top) Koivet.com has more info on MelaFix here.

Sorry for your fish :( . Maybe the store where you got him will give you a refund or credit for the loss since you bought him in a diseased state.
