really need some help, came home today, checked my little fishies and they were all fine. although later tonight i noticed i was missing a madagascar rainbow. i pulled all the plants out and still couldnt find him. I've postd on here before about missing neons and someone said sometimes they can jump out. i dismissed this as my tank has a lid with only a very slight gap in it. but on this occassion i thought id look. I found him on the floor :-( thinking i was too late, i went to pick him to put him to his rest and and his gills flapped. i quickly picked him up (he was already dried out) and put him in a breeding tank. he's still breathing and has more movement now but is still upside down.

i know it doesnt sound good but is there anything else i can do to help?

peace and quiet and wait and see with the light off if it improves, it got an air stone in tank to increase oxygen levels?

I'd put him back in his normal tank - its the parameters he's used to ;) no undue shock / change.

keep the lights out and your fingers crossed - be prepared for a scabby looking fish in the morning it's slime coat will be going nuts trying to repair the damage.

thanks, i've put him near the oxygen stone and he's a little scraggy looking but hes swimming and eating! :D amazed at how quickly hes picked up!

I'd leave off putting him straight back in your tank as he'll get picked on unless you can seperate him within the tank, also the air stone will help with oxygen

hes swimming fine now and the other rainbow is always next to him. the tank only has tetra's and a gourami in it and they seem to be leaving him alone. hopefully he will survive

good luck weve all had this in the past. im sure he will be ok. although i dont normally advise the use of any thing other than salt this time you may want to consider adding some melafix to keep the bacteria away from him. certainly a water change in the morning will help

Thats amazing that hes recovering. I wish you luck. He'll be a trooper after this eh? maybe learn from his adverture?

Well im glad to hear that he is coming around :)
poor guy

Happy for the little guy......buy you were lucky. Learn from the experience and try to fill the gap so no more fish can get out.

all the best

I'm happy too :)

I read the title of you post and was sure there was a tragedy about to unfold, but you said he's recovering - outstanding!

sadly he's taken a turn for the worst :-( he's now upside down again and is hardly moving. every now and then he flaps his fins. i've put him back in the breeding tank to stop him getting bullied. Is it possible he could have brain damage due to lack of oxygen? im not too sure how long he was out of the water. im hoping he might just be a little stressed and will pick up again. :-(
