As I`m upgrading to a tank that`s double the size of my current one, 180-360ltrs I was wondering if I could add some Emerald Dwarf Rasbora with my Apisto`s, GBR`s, Danios and Harlequins?

They appear to be small, peaceful community fish but would like to ask for opinions on them before I make any decision please.

Hi

I've never heard of them but I know it's frustrating when no-one replies to you.

As they're dwarf rasboras I'd imagine they'd always be fine in a tank that size. How the other fish will be with them I've no idea though :(

Thanks for your reply Twinklecaz :good:

I just don't want to make a mistake that could be detrimental to the Rasbora or my other fish. Hopefully someone will be able to help :)

I did some research on them and I think I found they were very shy, best kept as species.

As they are so tiny , the GBR or Apisto might snack on them :hey: so I dont think you should add them
I've alsio heard these are very shy and hide in tank corners or in caves and only come out to feed.
However I think you shold consider adding Green Barred Danio (Barilius pulchellus) which looks identical only bigger.
Some info on Green Barred Danio here

Thanks ellena and Carlovel B-)

I have read that they`re peaceful and somewhat shy which is why I wondered if they`d be any good but the last thing I want to do is put fish in that will end up as a snack, I`d never forgive myself.

Thanks for the link Carl, I already have long finned leopard danios who take up the majority of the surface so don`t really want to overcrowd there, plus I`d like to get a fish with plenty of colour for the tank, if I can find anything suitable.

I guess I`ll keep looking but I won`t add anything until I`ve checked the safety and compatibility first.

Thanks again :good:

Barilius and Opsarius (both "Hillstream trout" species, I have three types in total) have very specific needs that rule out many other common community fish...
  • Many of them are regarded as at least "semi-predatory" and will happily snack on "torpedo-shaped" fish upto about 6cm SL. Tankmates need to have deep bodies eg. my Humphead Glassfish (although I suspect adult Neon Dwarf Rainbows and Bleeding Heart Tetra etc. would be fine too, in terms of shape, but not necesarily water conditions as explained below).
  • Virtually all hillstream trout require fast flowing, cool water (less than 23C ideally). Like "Hillstream Loaches" they need high oxygen saturation of the water.
  • Some species of hillstream trout are very aggressive towards smaller fish, even ones larger than themselves. My red-finned Barlius (either canarensis or sp.2 bakeri) have been causing havok in my Rio240 of late and they are only ~7cm SL.
  • Many are energetic and boisterous fish at least part of the time and hence I am moving mine to a 5x2x2 tank this bank holiday weekend. I have been increasingly concerned about my species feeling claustrophobic in my 4x1.3x1.6 tank in recent weeks.
  • At least some have the nasty trait of many barb species, in that they constantly need to "fight" for higher hierachy spots in their territory, so they need to be in groups of at least six of their own species. Again referring to my own tank, I am strongly considering either buying more Barilius (ideally females, but sexes are not obvious) or finding homes for the ones I have.
  • As much as they are beatiful and quirky fish, there is so little information out there to refer back to for how to care for them.
