I've browsed these forums for some time but have just recently posted.
I've been in the fish-keeping hobby for quite a many amount of years. I started with Bettas when I was about 8 years old. I had two and kept them in fish bowls. They both lived near 3 years.
I also had the ever-popular 20 gallon tank with two goldfish that only lived a couple years. Then came the 33 gallon community tank, which was a disaster I'd rather never speak of again.
And along came the internet, and for the past few years, better fishkeeping. Currently I'm housing a 4-inch Oscar in what I'm told is a 55 gallon tank. It's about 4 feet long, 18 inches wide, and 2 feet tall. As is my luck the tank is leaking and has to be taken down and re-sealed, so I purchased another tank for the Oscar. Once this tank is repaired I plan on re-stocking it. My idea so far is with Mbunas. But nothing's set in stone at this point.
I also have a 10 gallon filtered and heated tank with a Betta. I get a vicious kick out of taking Bettas from those TINY little cups at the pet stores where they can't even extend their fins and sticking them in a well filtered and heated tank with room to swim, places to hide, and reflections to flare at. This is "my son's fish". He's only 4, and he's to help with water changes, feedings and such maintenance.
My boyfriend's friend has a pirahna he can no longer keep that we'll be taking in soon. Not my idea... I know nothing about them save that most species do MUCH better in large groups. This fish has been kept alone it's whole life in what sounds like a 48 or 50 gallon tank. He's not at all shy. He's bold, neurotic, and attacks hands at feeding time. I'll gladly do the research on keeping him healthy, but feedings can be his job
Aside from fish, my other main hobby is my dogs. I currently have an Akita cross that I plan on taking through the Schutzhund trials. Schutzhund 1 is obediance, and that's what we're currently working on. Once he passes Basic and Advanced obediance classes with a certified trainer (who happens to be a good friend of mine) I'll see how much farther I want to push him. It's a very high-stress and demanding sport.
And I have an Olde English Bulldogge puppy who I pick up in October from the breeder. I'm not sure what I'll expect from this dog. I'll see what he's best suited for as he grows up.
Glad to be here, and hope to get to know everybody.
