I recently bought and used an elite stingray submersible filter by hagen while cycling my latest ten gallon. Other than it being big and impossible to hide in the tank, I thought it was ok.

I just finished putting some plants into the tank which has finished cycling and my opinion of this filter is dropping quickly. I've normally used hang on back power filter and am used to seeing debris sucked up into the intake. This stingray doesn't suck up a single thing. I was watching closely as some pieces of root and some mushy leaf parts actually brushed up against the intake and floated on by. How is this thing supposed to keep the water clean if nothing gets pulled into the intake?

It does produce a nice current in the water though. I think I'm going to end up buying a HOB filter because this thing is just ineffective. Maybe I could use it in a fry tank or when I try follow bloozoo2's patented "amano shrimp breeding programme" as I'm bound to do sooner or later. ;)

Has anybody else used this brand? What do you think of it?

Funny you mention my name ;) I use a Elite Stingray 5 (for a 5 gal tank) in my 6.6 gallon, and it's ultra powerful ! It's a 24" long tank and I have to turn the nozzle 90 degrees to the back of the tank because the outflow and suction is too strong - even on a small tank that long.
It sounds like you have a duff filter there or something isn't quite right....

I get very good current so the output must be good, but like I say not even mushy plant leaf went into the intake. If it can't suck that up, I don't know what it can.
Perhaps I need to fiddle around with it some more... Maybe the covers aren't on tight or something.

When can I expect the hardcover edition of your breeding programme to hit store shelves?? Fantastic achievement, by the way.

That sounds really bizarre and just not right. My filter with reduced flow sucks visible particles, bits of leaves from right the other end of the 24" tank. How long have you had the filter - and is it a new filter ?

Haha - can't county my chickens (erm, shrimps yet)..... but they are growing steadily and by now I've exceeded my wildest expectations and hopes. But so many uncertainties to deal with, so if this succeeds it will indeed be a miracle combined with luck !

Well, I think I may have flown off the handle prematurely. I came back from work and it seems like the filter is working okay after all. :*) The bits of plant are stuck on the intake so it is sucking up gunk I guess. That and the water looks nice and clear, no more debris floating around. I don't know what was wrong with it when I was watching earlier. One nice thing about it, it's silent-can't hear a thing with it going.

Hi,

I have the exact same filter and use it in my fry tank. I haven't had any problems with mine. It does suck up the smaller debris from the tank and the current is great from the output. In fact my fish love playing in it.
