I have just captured an electric yellow from my 75gallon tank who is holding eggs. She is now in a smaller tank where I am hoping she will spit the fry :D

Do I need to do anything besides feed her? Will she be OK in a smaller tank till she spits? She was freaking out a bit at first but now seems to have settle down a bit.

I think a ten gallon is pretty much minimum for breeding african cichlids if thats what you have your fine for size, if you can try make sure it is glass bottom it is imensely helpful and don't feed her until she spits because she won't eat anyways, then return her to the her main tank

Sorry to drag this one up again.

One of my labs is holding too and I will be transferring her to a fully cycled 15 gallon tank tonight (currently has 2 platys and 2 swordys that I will be moving out.

Do I have to remove all of the substrate? Should I put anything in for her to hide behind? Rocks etc?

How long will she "hold" for?

What if she doesn't spit?? Have read about having to "strip" them. What exactly does this invlove?

cheers guys

steve

do need to remove the substrate. give her a rock or two to give her some cover and let her feel secure.

she will spit.. no question about it if noting else is in the tank.

stripping is pretty easy but i'm pretty sure you wont have to ;)

I would take out the substrate too, I had my kennyi holding and couldn't find the babies to see if she hads spit them all or not, only 4 made she must have eaten the rest, I just pulled all the gravel out and replaced the ugf with sponge filter for the elongatus female

A good breeding tank is bare bottom sponge filtered with a cave or rock against the glass sop the mother can go under and a few rocks, the fry can hide along the edges

She will hold for three to four weeks and make sure you get her out of the tank as soon as you can without fry in her mouth

I like to place a couple of rocks nicely cultivated with algae - it provides a ready food for the little guys. I used sand because I wanted the tank to look more like an aquarium, but Vantage has described the best fry setup.

Stripping is rarely needed. If she reaches 30 day or so of holding and still refuses to spit then it becomes worth doing. It doesn't happen often, but it does sometimes, and has happened to me. Do a search on stripping, I went through the process a little while ago.
