Hi,

I was thinking of getting an Electric Yellow Lab for my community tank.

Currently I've got 2 mollies and 5 zebra danios

My water is 7.5-7.8 ph.

I've got a book that says they are not territorial or aggressive so I thought it might be OK?

But I wondered what more experienced members here think?

1. My tank is about 96 litres (25 gallons), It is only 2 feet or 600mm long. Is it too small for an Electric Yellow Lab? If I got a small one, how long before it reached full size?

2. Would it be OK to just get one? Or would they be distressed to not have a mate? If you just got one would you get a male or a female?

3. I've got lots of plants. Would he/she eat all my plants up?

I love the yellow colour, but I don't want to get one if he/she wouldn't be happy!

Thanks for your help!!

cheers

Have a look into a orange chromide. They are a great yellow when mature and are fine on their own.

a yellow lab will probably eat the zebras so id say not a good idea sorry :good:

Thanks for your thoughts

I think a yellow lb might get too big too?

1: Tank is too small (you want to be looking at 2 and a half or 3 foot bare minimum

2: Male and Females are both fairly accommodating fish but cichlids should never (imo) be kept with community fish, no matter their natural temperament.

3: depends on your plants, usually the only decent plants to keep with cichlids (that can withstand the digging) are java fern and another I can't quite remember the name of.

My personal opinion: Give it a miss or sell your tank and community fish, do a bit of research and invest in a larger tank and start enjoying the wonderful world of cichlid keeping!

thanks for your advice.

I'm enjoying my wee fishes and plants so I think I'll hang on to them! But if I ever get a bigger flat and a bigger tank I think I'll look into cichlids!

If you are after cichlids, some of the dwarf South American and Dwarf African (non-Rift) are very nice, and suitable for a community tank.

thanks for your thoughts, I'll bear that in mind!
