I have an Electric Yellow that appears to be holding eggs, however i am not to sure, she seems to have an enlarged pocket under her bottom jaw, and she is continually opening and closing her mouth and gills.... I have seperated her from my community tank and put her into a seperate tank.... is there a good chance she is holding eggs???

Pawly,

If she is holding, then congrats! I have 6 of the same yellow labs and I am also thinking that one of them might be holding. If I am not mistaken though, you might want to be careful as to when and where you move her from the main tank. I have read alot that doing this may cause her to 'spit' early, before the fry are ready. I have heard this is true for a lot of other cichlids, so I am assuming that yellow labs would be the same.

Congrats again and good luck!

Tommy,

Thanks for the reply, well i was planning on moving her into a 50L tank and just taking the water out of my Cichlid tank when i do a water change and then put her in there... the problem is she was in just a community tank and i only noticed her like a week ago... so i dont really know how far along she is, so i will be looking at putting her into there asap....

I have just "spat" her, and i managed to get 13 babies :) they are now in a 50L tank by themselves and they look rather happy... i have placed the mum back into my cichlid tank and she is looking better than ever :) i cant wait for my babies to grow up :)

Hey wait!

My electric yellow has done this about 4 times so far. I thought she was just sick or sensitive to water conditions so I would change the water and she would look better.

I do have one baby electric yellow though in a net that I saved. If she was holding eggs all those times, they must have all got eaten or somthing, I didn't even know thats what they do. GRR. I could have had a million electric yellow by now.

Bugger hey... looks like you will have to look out for it next time, and maybe seperate her, or add lots of little hiding places for the babies. A friend of mine started with 2, 1M, 1F, and now she has about 30... and this was with no seperation of the holding mother, it was just that she provided enough hiding spots for the babies.... :) thanks to her, i now have my own group :)
