Electric Bill

There is hardly any effect on your electricity bill from your aquarium no matter what size it is. Heaters only use electricity when they are on and unless you don't heat your home they are not on all the time. Even when they are on they are only using maybe 50 to 300 watts depending on your heater size. Thats not much electricity. Most filters use hardly any more electricity than heaters. Most aquariums use less electricity than a desk lamp.

This answer might seem a tad daft but here I go:

Since setting my aquarium back up I now have two kids who spend their evenings watching the fish, changing the water when needed, taking photographs etc etc. They are no longer upstairs with televisions, computers, music centres, lights etc running all the hours god sends and I honestly think my electricity bill has gone down.

Otherwise I have a medium tank with heater, light and filter and have noticed no increase in my bills at all.

Don't really know but i can tell you that a 15w bulb cost 3p every 12 hours to run.

I was actually talking to the father in law the other day and the subject of tanks and electric usage came up. My wife's parents live about 200 yards away from us in an identical house, we both have ponds and have exactly the same filters pumps etc. I have 6 tanks from 20 gallon up to 80 gallon, all with power filters, heaters and lights on and we use less electricity than they do and they have no tanks  . Appliance wise everything is pretty much the same apart from a couple of bits, so the obvious answer is tank don't use as much electricity as most people think.

I have 15 tanks currently running, costs around $50 per month extra on the bill. I do keep mine a little warmer than most 82F to 86F, angels like it a little warmer. Heaters are your main electrical draw.

It actually costs me a little less to run them in the winter, 12 of the tanks are in one room with a vent cut into the main trunk of my forced air heating system. It's cheaper to heat with gas than electric here. That room sits around 80F in the winter as long as I keep the door closed.
