Eheim Sludge Extractor

Has anyone had any previous experience with this contraption? Is it any good? Are there any better ones that anyone can recommend?

I got one and it was pretty good - certainly better than any other battery powered gravel cleaner. As with all of them, you have to clean out the filter very regularly or you just put dirty water back into the tank. I stopped using mine when I got a python, but I'm setting a sand tank up now and I hear they're great for a quick 'hoover' when you don't want to do a water change.

I'd certainly recommend them as the best of the non water changing gravel-cleaners.
