I have a external EHEIM 2322 thermofilter max 500 L/H

I am at the moment setting up a 3ft tank and i have an under gravel filteration for it which i would like to use.

I have had small tanks in the past and have had bad experiences with the tank having to be cleaned quite regular.

This is what i have thought of

So what i will have is, the main pipe as it is with the intake strainer, then branch off above the strainer to the undergravel filter.

Will my filter power both for this setup or would i need a second pump.

What is your views on this

Normal flow U/G filter
If you want to run an undergravel filter with an external canister filter then simply stick the intake tube from the canister inside the uplift tube of the undergravel. Then the Eheim will suck the water through the gravel where most of the dirt and debris will be trapped, and the clean water will then be drawn into the canister filter before being returned to the tank.

Reverse flow U/G filter
However, another way exists. Put the return pipe from the Eheim into the uplift tube and let it push water under the undergravel filter and blow most of the gunk up and out of the gravel. Then have the Eheim's intake in the tank sucking up all the gunk.

Whichever you choose, you will need to do regular gravel cleans and water changes just as normal.

The under-gravel filter shouldn't be needed at all if you are using the Eheim external. All it will do is create extra work for you when it comes to cleaning the tank.
