I set up a brand new Eheim 2224 canister filter this weekend - it included a special intake:

I finally got it started, but it is very noisy, and it appears to be drawing in 2/3 water and 1/3 air. Thinking about it, the intake should be airtight shouldn't it? So rather than a problem with the motor/impellor, the noise and irregularity are being caused by the air, which in turn is caused by an air leak somewhere in the intake?

I know it is probably really obvious, but i had so many problems getting it going, I just need someone's input on this problem :D

Please tell me if you think I'm on the right lines. I have checked the obvious points for being air tight (with Eheim everything works on O rings) but I could take it all apart, or swap the hoses and in/out takes from my other 2224 and see if it makes a difference.

are you SURE its sucking air?

i run two of these and when set up after a clean they often take a few mins to clear te air from the unit....sounds noisey till its done and air is blasted out the outlet - sometimes a good shake of the unit clears it quicker.

I've been shaking it, and it's been running over 24 hours now - you can see the air going down the intake hose into the filter - looks like a vortex. I thought at first maybe it was meant to be like that, then I told myself how stupid i was because the end of the intake is in water, so it should just suck up the correct volume of water.

Guess I'm gonna have to take the intake apart.

I would suggest disconnecting the intake from the auctual hoseing and just use the hoseing as an intake directly into the water, and this way you will know if the new intake is the problem.

If it starts to function properly (just give the cannister a few shakes over the course of a few minutes to dispel any trapped air) well then you will know the cause of the leak.

Yes the intake has to be airtight to function properly when submerged, but it could only be leaking at the point where it is exposed to the air, but i suppose you know that, sorry if im pointing out the obvious.

good luck finding the leak

Excellent advice black angel - it was the O ring on the first segment of the in pipe. Now all sorted and working perfectly!

thank you!

Sarah

its good you found the problem, my hubby was cursing for hours trying to find why the air was coming in.
