I want to clean my Eheim external filter but I can't get the damn thing apart! I've unplugged it from the mains, turned off all the taps, disconnected the pipes, undone the locking clips but I can't for the life of me separate the top and bottom. It's like they were glued together. Help!

Tried opening the taps ? 
that was my fist time mistake too - and I assume is yours.
Unless you open the taps, it's going to create a vacuum and no pulling in the world is ever by human force going to prise it apart.
(Sincerely hope you didn't come anywhere close to the seals with a knife)

You were quite right ! Thanks a million for the advice. My three female platys all gave birth during the night and I just wanted to ensure none had got sucked in plus its a good excuse to do a bit of maintenance .
(The only person round here who would be happy to weld a knife in the vicinity of the tank is the father in law who threatens he wishes to fry up the live stock )
