Eheim Classic 2217

I have a Aqua UFO 880 and a external Eheim Classic 2217. I have been told this is big enough to use in the tank. The eheim is 2nd hand, I can here the filter running and if i pour water down the inlet pipe it will come out of the outlet pipe. but i dont know why it is not sucking water there is not even a hint of sucktion.

WHAT AM I DOING WRONG???

I have tried sucking on the outlet pipe and other than a mouth full of water nothing happens.

are you sure the propellor is spinning, if its stuck and not moving freely it wont circulate the water, have you also tried without any media ? as this can also prevent it from circulating if installed incorrectly.

Where is it in relation to the tank? If it's not kept below tank level that could be the problem. I'd also check the impeller.
