My filter today leaked everywhere. The small rubber seal between the top part and the top media tray connection has 2 very small slits and the filter unit itself appears to be noisy and and leaking out over the sides. I've checked and reseated everything multiple times but its still leaking and noisy. I really don't know what part has failed? It's still leaking but working. Impeller section all looks fine.

Sounds like you're going to have to replace the rubber seal.

Had you not been using the filter for a while by any chance, giving the seal a chance to dry up? It's advised to keep them moist.

No It's been in constant use so bit weird.

Panicked and stuffed what I can of some media from it until my only spare filter (u1) for now!

Also I've put all the media trays and media in a bucket submerged in tank water with a spare heater and powerhead in the hope to keep it alive! Dosed a bit of ammonia.

God knows what failed so I ordered a new big top gasket and o ring things!

Constant as in while you've been cycling I presume? Otherwise I'm a little worried about you dosing ammonia.

Anyway, I hope the new ring comes soon!

He said he dosed ammonia in the spare bucket!

Some stores carry a heap of spares, where are you? Always good to note your local ones. Online shopping is easy but not always cheaper and certainly not good in emergencies. There are at least two shops near me that I know stock spare seals.

Have you opened up the lid and checked the impeller by taking it apart? Sometimes it can just get gunged up, or the ceramic it spins round can crack, all manner of things and not likely to require a whole new unit. If you can work it out and fix it, you would have a spare for next time!

Yeah in hindsight I should of looked around any local stores for spares rather than online. They'll be coming tomorrow though I expect. I also did it online straight away because I have been working solidly without any time off to even try to visit anywhere!

And yes Josh lol, it's a mature tank mate and I was dosing the bucket, not the tank!!

Oops, sorry - my bad! That's what I get for posting at 1am :p

New gaskets and a water change and we are all good again.

Great. Although a million times better there is still a small leak! I've checked the canister itself, the pipes, and seals, and I can't see anything obvious!

I actually had a leak from mine the other day, it was just a case of taking the lid off and putting it back on. Glad I noticed before it got serious though!

I think it's just a case of carefully looking for the leak for you!

Indeed and I've no bloody idea where it is. There are no water marks/runs down from the top down the sides, no cracks in the casing, and the pipes are dry. Stumped.

Unfortunately it sounds like time to get a new one, especially if you can't find the root of the problem and therefore trust the filter...
