First I'll apologize ahead of time as I know pretty much zero about saltwater aquariums or aquariums in general. A buddy who is into them got me started with a tank but wasn't sure what to do with my filter I had already.

I have a Eheim 2213 canister but just the canister and tubes, nothing in the canister besides the grates. The guy at the pet shop said I shouldn't even need the filter with a protein skimmer and live rock but that didn't seem right to me so I figured I try here. If the Eheim will in fact help my tank what do I need to use to fill the canister? Right now the tank just has sand, a few pieces of live rock, heater and a powerhead. Any help is appreciated. thanks.

Strange as it may seem, he's right :). Describing the "Berlin Method" of saltwater filtration. Most folks around here use it. There are alternatives, but it's the most common and produces good results.

Might wanna have a look through the pinned topics and journal sections to see what some people have come up with.

Oh and :hi: to the forum

:hi:
I was (and still am) a complete novice when I started my tank, I had never kept fish before, I spent hours reading all the pinned topics and journals,
Everyone on here is so helpfull, ask plenty of questions, no question is a silly question. We love to see photos of developing tanks :D

So pictures please :good:

Thanks for the info guys. I tried finding and faq and stickied posts but didn't realize they were in the other section of the forum. I'll check that out for sure. As for pics I don't have anything cool yet but my buddy had me take pics as we set stuff up and filled the tank to keep a log of the progress.
