Hi, I had a shipment of plants arrive today and I promptly planted them in my aquarium. Once I had finished I stood back to admire my work. However, after looking at one of the plants I noticed some oval shaped objects that look suspiciously like eggs of some kind. Someone I know ordered plants from the same place and had a problem with caterpillars after he had planted his. I was just wondering, if these turned out to be caterpillars would they thrive like snails do or will the fish simply eat them when they hatch?

Well, caterpillars or not they certainly looked like them! They must be some kind of larvae but I'm sure the fish will eat them I just need a second opinion before I let them hatch or go to the trouble of taking the plant out and picking off these eggy looking things -_-

Well, most fish will eat any kind of insect or larvae. But you never know if the larvae have parasites or bacteria in them though.

P.T.

That's true, thanks P.T. I will take the plant out and get rid of anything suspicious looking, better to be safe then sorry eh ;)

They're probably snails. It's difficult to get rid of those guys when they hitch a ride on your plants!

Yeah, although the eggs look a little big to be snails. I'll pick the eggs off tomorrow and hopefully that's the last I'll see of them :shifty:

Erm... how did aquatic plants have a problem with caterpillars?

Maybe they had aquatic caterpillars?

The caterpillar shaped larvae that I had in my tank eating the plants turned out to be mayfly larvae, but still, there is such a thing as an aquatic caterpillar.
