Hi - can anyone tell me, does the introduction of CO2 (using the Nutrifin system) effect the level of oxygen in the water?

I have in the past had bad experiences of running air pumps as it tends to promote algae growth so if the oxygen level is reduced, how should I go about raising it again??

This is about planted tanks, but I am also a newbie!!!!!

Any help appreciated - Thanks

Set up is:

Juwel Rekord 70, with 15W Trocal plant tube, Juwel reflector, nutrifin CO2 and dennerle fertiliser below 1.2mm quartz gravel

The addition of CO2 will drive out some O2. I have a Rekord 70 and i`m running two nutrafin systems at present 24/7 and i have no problems with regards to the fish.

Don`t run a air pump since it`ll drive the CO2 out and with only one nutrafin unit in the tank your addition will be limited anyway!

The summarise: Run your CO2 you`ll have no problems and the addition of CO2 along with good lighting will reduce algea so ur issues will be resolved. Don`t worry about your O2 levels, you won`t be able to reduce them that much with only one CO2 unit in a 20g tank.

Dont the plants create the oxygen in the water? adding CO2 helps the plants create oxygen in the water. Ive got a juwel rekord 96 with two nutrafins & dont seem to have a problem.

the amount of O2 the plants make is almost negligable i would imagine ! Imagine how little rise in CO2 conc. you get with a bubble a minute, well i certainly get nothing like that IF my plants perl at all!

Welcome to TFF!

CO2 will not affect O2 directly. However using light + CO2 the plants take in carbon and release O2 - photosynthesis. Lack of O2 is not an issue in a well-planted tank, even with minimal surface/air interface.

Running 24/7 CO2 is fine in the vast majority of cases.

Thanks for your comments and advice. Really keen to have a well planted, clean tank that will provide interest for the inhabitants without a big mess of algae.

Thank you
