my fish are all doing fine and the tank is all clean looking then wham! the next morning theres a fishy massacre the ph level dropped from 7.2 to 6.4 whats happening to my fishies!

Please post your tank size and inhabitants, how long tank has been set-up, if you mean by massacre that fish have died.
Do you have other water stats than PH, such as ammonia, nitrite, nitrates?

29 gallon tank i had around 20 something inches of fish and all the levels were fine

No but i think i know the problem i have to rplace the filter cartridge

I have never listened to the manufactures comments about replacing filter media e.g Sponge, I have had the same ones in for about 2yrs now (my filters are external). Just keeping it clean by swilling in aquarium water(syphoned of the tank into a bucket) works for me.I realise this might not be to everyone's regime, But they want to sell them and this is the best way they can .....By saying you need to replace them every couple of months. If you are going to do it change half at a time.

Scam artists...they also mentioned nothing about cycling they said three days is fine for 1 third of my tank...

you got it....and the fact about putting in cycle stuff every water change.Once your filter is up and running with a good bacterial load you havent got to worry, you only use it for about 6-8 weeks starting a new filter...
