I bought this off plantedtanks.co.uk without thinking http://www.plantedtanks.co.uk/echinodorus-paniculatus-emerse-818-p.asp.

This will have been grown emersed i assume. Pygmy chain sword is often grown (faster) emersed then sold on, planted submersed, dies back, then regrows differently.

Will this happen to the sword i bought too? It really isn't doing too well, while the rest of my plants i bought at the same time are. It's just not growing, while lots of the leaves are developing brown patches and holes.

Is it simply dying back in order to regrow properly in its submersed form?

the link appears to be broken but if the leaves are more stem with an oval shaped leaf with a point, like mine were, then yeah it will be a big pain to watch it die back and then a joy to watch come back, trust me it looks a whole lot different.

its just dieing back for the new growth im just going through the same thing with an Echinodorus uruguayensis i got ive trimmed the dieing leaves off to encourage the new growth

Yeh like said before there will be some die back from those leaves once those go yellow the Amazons will never repair the leaves so its best to take them off. However I have found some of my amazon swords have held those emersed leaves for ages, months and months and they've been healthy. Too afraid to remove them in case they are the main driving force of growth.

My Echino Rubin has still some leaves which have been there for around 4/5 months now without dying so I assume they must of grown in the LFS after shipping from the plant farm.

yeah those leaves will probably end up dieing off, the end result still looks nice though

and like josh said they could keep them, mine have kept some of theres, though im removing them now since they are riddled with holes

if you want you can prune all the emersed leaves and then just stick with the smaller bits of submersed growth, idk if removing all/most the leaves would be best though so wait till someone can confirm
