i have a few of these echinodorus plants in my tank and they seem to be thriving which is unusual for me.....

on a couple of them they have shot up to the water surface and on the shoot/stem there are new plants growing. the leaves are about 3-4 inches long with roots hanging down from them. there are about 4 new plants on each stem and i was wondering if i should leave them as they are as they look pretty cool like this or do i have to cut and plant them like the main plants?

I'm fairly sure that if you leave them eventually they will fall off by themselves, at which point you can plant them :good: I might be wrong about that though, so wait for someone with more experience with swords.

I leave mine on, adds plants higher up the tank. slows down the adult plant a bit though. Plant-lets will get bigger and probably more of them. If there gets to many thin them out and plant them on their own. IMO.

The most interesting part of all this is that once the runners reach the surface, it is possible to get flowers rather than baby plants. The san e"node" that when submerged produces a baby plant porocduces a flower if at the surface and exposed to air. the first time I saw this in one of my tanks I was so surprised.

You can remove the plantlets for sale or use in other tanks once they get a bit of size. Some folks will bend the runner down and plant the roots of each one while still attached to the runner.

cheers guys.

i kind of like the way they look as they are so ill leave them a while as they seem to be doing ok. if i do remove them will they just pull off or do i cut them off?
