About how much would a 46 gallon bowfront weigh? I'm probably getting one for my birthday this year and was wondering if I could put it on the second story of the house.
Thanks!

this is incorrect....that final calculation would be assuming that each litre is 1 pound...not 2.2... so multiply that by the final answer and you come up with about 383 pounds for just the water.The-Wolf said:water weighs 2.204684lb per litre
1 ltr = 0.02642 US gallons
therfor 3.785 ltr= 1 us gallon
46x3.785 = 174.11lbs
thats just the water
I have no idea on the tank you would have the best guess for that.

nc_nutcase, do you realize what an asset you are to this forum?!? i am delighted by your knowledge of building codes!! know anything about apartments?nc_nutcase said:In the US the regulation standard for any single resident home is that the soil beneath the home has a 2,500 lb per sq ft bearing capacity. That mean the house is designed to hold 2500 lbs on every square foot of its footings (a little over half that on the slab). It would be a long boring circle for me to directly relate that to your fish tank upstairs, but looking at just that much... houses are designed to easily hold something as light as 500 lbs.
Another simple test... if a 200 lb man were to jump on a scale, it is very realistic that the numbers will reach 350-400 lbs. which means your tank would put about as much pressure on your floor as a slightly overweight man falling on the floor. Hardly a structural threat.
