Easy Plants?

Recently had to replace the lamp and kept the box, so I can actually answer that one! :)

Going by the dimensions, the tank is closer to 34 gallons than 37 gallons, but that's still only 0.5 wpg and the tank is very deep. It's very little light, so look for plants which can survive in low light. I recommend that you start by adding a reflector behind the lights (I use kitchen foil). In a slightly deeper tank with 0.65 wpg of T8s (so basically same as yours), I have Crypt. wendtii 'brown' (recently added some other Crypt. wendtii cultivars, ask me in a couple of months how they're doing), Echinodorus bleheri (Amazon sword), Java moss, Java ferns, Thai onion, Anubias spp. are all doing well. Stem plants are generally not doing that well, which is a shame, but that's what one gets with low light. Is there any sunlight entering the tank at any point during the day? If there is, that might help because my Pogostemon helferi and Hygrophila polysperma 'Rosanervig' are doing ok in those areas of my tank (but not in others). Out of those, don't get more than one sword and no more than one onion (they are relatively greedy).

Different people have very different experiences with the same plants, even if everything is the same, so I do recommend that you also try ones I haven't mentioned there.

Ah, I think I mistyped up top. 23 3/4 tall, so when I put it in the calculator I got 37 gallons with the correct dimension. Still, just a couple gallons difference.

Would it be ok to put a stronger lamp in there to help with the plants? If so, what wattage?

I close the blinds during the day while I'm out so no one can see in the house as this tank sits in our living room on an aquarium stand near our large TV. Even with the blinds open though, it's far enough away from the sliding glass doors that I don't think it would get much light, especially since those doors lead to a covered, screened in patio.

Would the plants you mentioned need special nutrients too or would they be ok just put in the current environment?

If you get a new lamp, then you'd need to get a different starter unit (ballast) too. If you want to change it, I recommend a 1-2 full-tank length standard T5 bulb with an electronic ballast: they're most efficient. I like to use colour 865 bulbs by Philips/Osram/whoever.
2 bulbs might be on the much side, but I find that deep tanks 24" and deeper do benefit from the second bulb.

I can't answer that for you because it depends on your tap water. Taking a wild guess, they'll grow without, but probably would do better with.
