My father whats to have some cichlids...he wants convicts and i want somthing else. Do firemouths breed easy? Do they ever cross breed with convicts? -_-

I dont think that Cons&Firemouths would breed...and even if they did i'd assume that most wouldn't hit maturity, but i might be wrong about that. While Convicts are easy to breed, you should have a plan to get rid of their fry as they can a batch every three to four weeks. Watch closely for aggression between your mateing pair. Also i found with mine that a deep layer of gravel is also a good idea as they will dig quite a bit and make sure that all decorations are well seated.
What size tank are you planning for them? I wouldn't do it in anything less than a 30gal tank. HIH ;)

Well, its going to be a 30 gallon a matter of fact~
I still need to check my LFS to see if will take the fry. If they dont my water snake will happliy take them(it'll be a treat compared to the regular goldfish) We have a high PH, will that matter? I know that african cichlids like high PH...are there any AC that breed readily?

I'm not to sure about easy to breed Africans...but i do know that Convicts are hardy fish who will do fine in a high Ph enviroment. As long as the water is stable then you shouldn't have a problem.

okay thanks, so i think ill get convicts. any other ideas better come quick(if any) :D

I kept convicts years ago and without the advice from this forum it was a community tank :S and they bred and bred and bred.... gotta be the easiest to breed as then i did not do regular water changes, had no idea what cycling was (riding a bike?) and fed flakes and thats it.

okay, yea I dont have to worry about getting rid of them. What do pink convicts and blue convicts make? Do they have mixture in their fry?

i reckon a female convict will try to breed with you, thats how easy the females are

i dunno about what the fry will come out as but i read up on the net and it said blue males are mroe atracted to pinks/albino females.

good luck with it, and dont put anything else in the tank with a breeding convict pair because all hell will break loose if you do

HTH

DD :)

The best way to breed them is to get 1 male and 2-3 females....This way you can spot a natural pair and take back the others...I had to do this as my male is extremely aggressive (like most Convict males) and would attack any solo female i would add with him....But once i let him choose it was easy sailing. I've heard of marble convicts which are suspose to be a cross between a Blue and Pink but i've never personally seen one.

really off topic BUT on your website where you list your fish, you've got the male and female betta pictures mixed up
just thought i'd let you know... :)

west African /Jewels and Kribs , not sure about lake cichlids .

Ask Freshmike.

My friend has pseudotrophius (sp?) zebras aka mbunas, which are african cichlids. They breed very easily. He's got babies coming out of the woodwork from his regular and albino tanks.

As for convicts I have a bunch of juveys in a 30 gal. I haven't bred them yet, but I got them from my friend Uli, who bred them. They're so easy in fact, that he went to Italy for a month and when he came home there were babies. (they were being fed, that's about it)

Convincts are easier for sure but since you have higher pH, I'd say you should go for mbuna - they are also easy to breed. If you want to raise all frys, make sure you don't have too much rock as in my case, I have to take out most of the rocks, then capture the holding female before she spits. It is typically an hour process!
