I run two filters on my 40 gal...a medium aqeon and a penguin 330. Yesterday i did a water change, probably 60%, and when i plugged back in my filters the penguin wouldnt restart! I tried adding water to it directly but still it wont get running!

ALSO! My krib this morning is upside down and looking reaalllyyy bad. Yes, he is breathing, but i really doubt he will be much longer. Anything i can do for him to have a chance? And what could i have done wrong?! I dechlorinated, the water is 0 nitrite and ammonia and just 10-20 ppm nitrate. Its a little on the basic side, about 7.3. I use the API master test kit. Now his girlfriend appears to be trying to wake him up... =(

Best I can come up with is something bad in the water from the water change.

Or that the test kit isn't reading for some reason. I don't use API, so I'm not sure, but I've heard some passing comments about misreads with some dechlorinators. Just a thought really.

Either way best I can suggest is a big water change, or a quarantine tank if you happen to have one.

edit, you didn't say, how long was the filter out of action for?

I'd still do the water change and consider a test error.

about 18 hours... but some how there was no ammonia spike. Guess my other filter did the trick, but id still expect a spike..

Strange...
If there is no ammonia spike because of the filter, the krib shouln't have been affected by it?
Was he sick before that?

I don't think the issue with your second filter would affect the ammonia/nitrite that much unless you are overly overstocked, or you have two mini filters
More filters is better for mechanical filtration and water movement, but the bioload is as much as the amount of fish you have, not the amount of filters(of course if adequate media is used)

I got exactly the same scare two days ago. Turned off the filter to wash the media and watever I did, it just wouldn't start anymore. My heart went into my socks, I'am telling you...I got it started somehow eventually, but my hands were nearly trembling.
Second filter is on the way just in case as a backup, though I don't need it for any other reason than that and maybe clearer water.
