hi

i recently bought my son a bio orb tank for his birthday, but we have lost 5 fish over the last 2 weeks, the fish when dead seemed to have a coating over them when we got them out, can you help please as he is getting very upset and i am unsure about buying him anymore until i have got any problems sorted.

thanks

I'm afraid not,

I suggest you look at the Beginners resource centre in the new to hobby section then read up on Fish-in cycling,

I got caught on a fish-in cycle on my 110ltr tank, 50% water changes 2-3 times per day for 6 weeks,

Hard work? Yes, Worth it, Definately.

thanks will look at it now, when you do change the water do you have to have the water left a room temp before or can it come from the tap?

I use tap water with de-chlorinator(?spelling), and add boiled water to bring it to roughly the same temp as the tank,

I've usually got 4 pots on the stove and the kettle boiling :D

Always make sure you add de-chlorinator to the water you are adding to your tank.

Haha, oh the joy, i sometimes steam the house out so bad that i cant see 6 feet in front of me! good way to warm the house up though - two birds and all that

your going to find it hard work with your new tank but persivere and it will be worth it, buy yourself a good test kit that measures ammonia, nitrite, nitrate and ph - use this at least once daily, theres all the advice you will need on this site so just ask all the questions you need too, it can be very confusing and overwhelming when getting started, i still remember when i first read all this stuff about cycling and the nitrogen cycle and i was blown away - what ever happened to the days of winning a goldfish at the gala and putting it in a bowl of water! Amazing things goldfish.
