hey everyone... quick update. i have 2 fish in a five-gallon tank that i left at home until i got settled in to college. i brought the one back to care for seperately in a small bowl just now. he is a goldfish but i was actually just told by someone very educated about fish that he is a red moon? something like that.

but my mom noticed oscar was acting funny and since he has been laying on the bottom of the tank on his side, still breathing, but not looking too good. but every now and then he will swim. i dont have the heart to, well you know, if there is still hope so im giving it until tomorrow.

i was told he might have ammonia poisoning and i conditioned the water and used the sea salt and he is in clean water. is ammonia poisoning supposed to kill a fish fast? i just feel like there could be something else i could be doing or trying just in case its something else or anything...?

if you have any ideas im getting pretty desperate and id be willing to try whatever i can. suggestions would be great.. thanks guys!

Your thread has been answered not having a go but a 5gal in no good for a fully grown goldifsh it will be like living in a toilet, plus it will hardly have a life in there, unanable to move like living in a shoe box.

i know and i thank you for that and appreciate it, i am just wondering if anyone else has any ideas that might be helpful because there is not much change, thanks

um, is it a goldfish named Oscar or a black&red fish species called an oscar? either way, you'll need a bigger tank if he does get better. right now, just focus on doing daily water changes.

i personally wouldn't add any meds at this point, since they increase the stress of major water changes and medicating for the wrong thing does more harm than good. ditto for the salt. lots of good clean water will do wonders.
