sorry this is my first post, and sorry if its in the wrong section.

my ciclid is dying, he is about 8 years old and has been getting a bit rough for a couple of weeks, he started going blind in both eyes (not at same time) and the other day started swimming funny, today hes worse.
his swim bladder has gone and has he seems to be fighting to get upright again his rear tail fin has broken off.
its a sad sight, kids are crying and itsclear the fish is suffering badly.

what is the quickest way to end it for him? i cant stand back and watch him suffer like this till he dies, hes got a lot of energy as hes alway moving, but i cant leave him no longer, please, some one tell me how i can end it for him now, i dont want to cut his head off, so some other way :(

That most likely is his life. 8 years is a pretty long time.

it is his time i belive, but he is suffering badly, i left him all day thinking he might die peacfully but he is still here.
if i leave him, he will still be here tomorrow night i know he will, dont wanna leave him suffering

google for the best way to kill aquarium fish.

Some suggest clove oil (puts the fish to sleep) and then vodka to kill. But I haven researched it that much. A LFS told me to boil cloves in water and then when it's cooled down put the fish in it.

have you ever tried it at all?

I've used sub 32 degree salt water to put down my dying tetras. Lots say freezing water is painful, but as soon as they drop in they are gone. The shock is too much and they stop breathing immediately.

thanks for the replays guys.
i left him last night and was gunna sort it out today but he had died in the night.

Sorry to hear of your loss  I think you were thinking the right thing by stopping his suffering, and that is a very hard decision to make...... Even though he died naturally please don't feel bad that you didnt intervien(i dont know how you spell it  ) sooner.
You had done the best you could. I'm only sorry that the time had come for the poor thing, but it happens to us all...one day....
I only can give my deepest sympathy to you and your family :( Take care

Sad when this happens... but there is an ineresting thread going on under the scientific section on this subject
(Euthanasia Of Freshwater Fish, Scientific discussion)

cheers for the replys, the kids were very upset, ive had him since my oldest was born and she is 7 1/2 now.

dont laugh, but chav (his name) will be missed, its just a shame he had to live in a different tank due to being a ciclid.
my last ciclid that lived for about 6 years wasnt as territoral as other ciclids, although he was the same type as chav, he lived happy in the coummiunity tank even sharing his hole with a big clown loach i had, which sadly did last year after about 7 years of having him too.

its a bit of a blow as ive lost a lot of good fish due to age, i had a fire mouth in the coummunity tank that lived for about 5 or so years and he was great, i know some of you may wonder why i had different ciclids in a coummunity tank but they really did live happly together which was strange.

a picture of chav, im not sure on the breed (if thats how you look at it) of him though

i will have a look for that post in the scientific discussion too, cheers
