I am starting this topic in addition to 55gallondude's dyed fish post. c1tyfc suggested I started a new topic, well here it is....

This was my post in the "If Ur A Fish Lover" topic:

I really hate to bring this post all the way to the front, but I have something to say. Dyed fish is bad and shouldn't be allowed at all becuse fish suffers alot. BUT don't you think that there are people out there that torture fishes far worst than those being injected??????? - I am talking about rookies.
There are rookies out there with 30 fishes in a 3 gallon tank with temperatures of 55 degrees, no filter and unbelieveable ammonia and nitrate levels!!!! (not to mention their water is murky!) Isn't that more torturing then a fish being dyed in a big 30 gallon tank with good water conditions and temperature?? So why not let's start educating these rookies who are killing more fishes than people dyeing fishes?
Don't get me wrong, I am TOTALLY against dyed fish, but my point is that we should be more worried about rookies that think fishkeeping is just simply dumping a fish into a tank and wonder why it died!!

Come on y'all!! Air out your opinions on this subject....which is more torturing? Dyeing fishes or fishes in the hands of a rookie?

I know what your talking about Chewy, I know some one who keeps two angels in a 5 gal. its horrible i talked to her and she was like "oops o-well". So im with you on this one.

Hi -Chewy- :)

Neither one is a good thing. And we can help with both issues.

First, we can protest the dyeing of fish by refusing to buy them and by complaining to the managers or owners of the lfs that sell them. :grr:

And second, we can help the newbies learn how to care for their fish. That's why we have a Beginners forum. Make the newcomers to the hobby feel welcome here and answer their questions. And, be gentle when they ask a question that to you has an obvious answer. Encourage them to participate and learn more and more about the basics of fishkeeping. Just knowing that a few fish are alive and comfortable will be well worth the effort.

Many of the rookies with horrible tank conditions are ignorant .... and while I don't condone ignorance, I believe that this is definitely the lesser crime here. People who dye fish know perfectly well what they're doing. If that aint the color they came with, then it's just plain wrong. There are many intracacies to keeping fish successfully in a tank, so there can be more leniency toward rookie mistakes; especially if the lfs gives bad advice or no advice at all.

Yes, noelberg, I agree that we should give rookies leniency as they are rookies. But many people want to stop dyed fish because of the pain the fish is going through, not that it is bad. (Because if there were no pain in dyeing fish, I would think dyed fish are ok.) Now because we are talking about pain, I think that the fishes in the rookie's fish tanks are suffering more pain than those dyed.

And besides, I would consider the way rookies handle their fishes a "crime"....look at what Paradise_Gourami posted....he or she has a friend that put 2 angel fishes in a 5 gal tank, and not like Paradise_Gourami didn't give her advice, she just ignored it.

I have a friend like this too, he has a goldfish in a 1 gallon tank, the water is brownish (copper) and it waterlevel is about 1/4 of the tank....(so about 1/4 gallon) He feeds it about 1 in 2 weeks and NEVER changes the water. I confronted him about his cruelty to his fishes and all he said was - "It's ok, this goldfish is very strong!!" :byebye: OH! not forgetting to mention that the goldfish lost an eye through one of his "normal" cleaning (which happens once a year). I think its eye got sucked out.....now tell me this goldfish is living a better life than a dyed fish???? And that this poor goldfish's master should be given some leniency because he's a rookie?? Don't think so man....
